An Introduction to Threads: The Newest Way to Be Social

Meta’s Threads is the latest contender to step up to the plate in social media, allowing users to create and share engaging content in various formats, including text, images and videos. The new app empowers users to express themselves creatively and connect with others through their posts. Resurrected from its initial launch in 2019 before shutting down in December 2021, the app relaunched successfully on July 5th. It has taken the world by storm, with over 150 million downloads in just under two weeks, according to Business Insider. With its impressive growth, Threads has quickly established itself as a formidable player in the social media landscape, captivating users worldwide with its intuitive interface and unique features.

A Close-Knit Relationship with Instagram
Threads and Instagram go hand in hand, forming a powerful duo in the social media realm. To access Threads, users need an Instagram account and will have the option to customize their Threads account to their liking. Threads offers users more of what they’ve been searching for in the digital space — control.

Threads grants this by allowing users to follow the same accounts that they’re already following on Instagram or letting them start over from scratch. With the ability to seamlessly transition their existing followers from Instagram to Threads, marketers and brands can tap into a pre-established fan base and instantly gain traction with their content. Users can also control who can mention or reply to them within Threads. Like Instagram, hidden words can be added to the filter, allowing users to screen out replies in their threads containing specific words. Users can unfollow, block, restrict or report a profile on Threads by accessing the three-dot menu. Additionally, any accounts users have blocked on Instagram will automatically be blocked on Threads.

Real-Time Conversations and Sharing
With an emphasis on encouraging microblogging and real-time conversations, the app is akin to the struggling social giant Twitter. Users can create posts containing up to 500 text characters or five minutes of video footage. This microblogging approach allows for concise and engaging content, encouraging users to strike up thoughtful conversations with people that have similar interests. This approach enables businesses to engage with their customers in a new and more interactive way.

Streamlined Functionality
Per the Meta branding, Threads was designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, relying on an algorithmic timeline versus a chronological one. And while the app currently lacks features like hashtags, trending stories and DMs, it focuses on providing a clutter-free environment for public dialogues leading to more meaningful interactions between users. The platform emphasizes public engagement, encouraging users to interact with posts through replies, reposts and likes. A process we are all familiar with by now.

Threads has quickly emerged as a formidable player in social media, captivating users worldwide with its engaging content formats and unique features, but will it remain relevant? Despite Meta’s intentions, with a lack of features such as private messaging and the ability to search trending topics or hashtags, users may feel they don’t have enough control over their app experience, especially when considering the inability to delete a Threads account without deleting the associated Instagram account. To remain relevant and address these concerns, Threads will need to carefully consider user feedback and adapt its features accordingly, ensuring a more comprehensive and customizable experience that aligns with the evolving needs of its user base.
